Gallery Les Bois is a contemporary art gallery dedicated to representing artists whose practices explore sustainability, stewardship, and humanity's relationship with the world around us. Through painting, sculpture, textiles, and mixed-media practice, our artists engage with some of the most relevant conversations of our time, environmental responsibility, material innovation, biodiversity, cultural continuity and human connection. Rather than viewing sustainability as a single issue, we embrace it as a broader philosophy. Gallery Les Bois is the trading name of Gallery Les Bois Limited. The gallery was founded in October 2024 by Claire-Julia Hill, Founder and Director.

Our Sustainability Assessment Methodology

Artistic quality comes first

At Gallery Les Bois, sustainability never substitutes for artistic quality. The work must first succeed as art: it must be beautiful, conceptually rigorous and potentially investment-worthy, with the integrity and depth to reward sustained engagement.

By potentially investment-worthy, we mean work supported by artistic merit, provenance, enduring relevance and long-term collector significance—not a promise of financial return.

Only within that essential artistic threshold do we assess sustainability. We treat sustainability as a broad framework rather than a single badge or score.

How we assess artists and artworks

When considering an artist and during subsequent reviews, we assess artistic quality and integrity alongside the relevance and support for environmental, material, cultural or social sustainability claims. Depending on the practice, we consider:

Materials and sourcing, including reclaimed, renewable, recycled, low-toxicity or locally sourced inputs
Making processes, waste reduction, reuse and circular approaches
Ecological research, restoration, biodiversity or environmental themes
Durability, repairability, stewardship and intended longevity
Material knowledge, cultural continuity and community knowledge
Transport, packaging and other operational impacts where information is available

Not every criterion applies to every artist or artwork. Gallery representation is not a third-party certification, and we do not award a universal sustainability score.

Evidence and attribution

We distinguish three levels of information:

Documented evidence: dated artist questionnaires, supplier or material information, invoices, certifications, studio records, research or project documentation, and operational data such as shipping or carbon records where available.
Artist statements: first-hand descriptions supplied by the artist or studio. These are attributed to their source and are not described as independently verified unless supporting evidence has been reviewed.
Gallery assessment: our curatorial judgement, based on the relevance, integrity and consistency of the practice. This is identified as Gallery Les Bois’ assessment rather than stated as an objective fact.

Specific quantitative, comparative or certification claims are published only when supporting evidence is available and the scope and date are clear.

Review, limitations and corrections

We review available evidence when an artist joins the programme, when a material process or claim changes, and at least once each year. This methodology was last reviewed on 9 August 2026; the next scheduled review is due by 9 August 2027.

Evidence varies by artist, and not every work has a complete lifecycle assessment. Information may be self-reported, incomplete or affected by changing standards. We update, qualify or correct claims when better information becomes available.

Gallery Les Bois was founded in October 2024 by Claire-Julia Hill, a passionate advocate for sustainability in the arts. Nominated as a finalist for the National Green Growth Awards, the gallery is leading a bold new wave in the art world. While studying art history at Cambridge, Claire-Julia kept coming back to the sense that something was missing in the art world—a space that brought sustainability and ethics into focus without losing the excitement and depth of contemporary art. That realization eventually became the seed for Gallery Les Bois.

Driven by a vision to create a gallery that felt both thoughtful and forward-looking, Claire-Julia launched the gallery with the mission to make environmental responsibility not just a theme, but a foundation. At 26, she took the leap, believing that sustainable art could be beautiful, challenging, and collectible all at once. Since then, Claire-Julia has been continually inspired by artists and the collectors who share this vision, creating a truly collaborative effort to shape a more conscious and sustainable art world.
