Begin with observation, not judgement
Before changing a practice, it is necessary to see it clearly. Many artists know every formal decision in a work yet have only partial visibility of the systems around it. Materials are ordered as needed, electricity is included in rent, waste disappears into a communal bin and transport is arranged by a gallery or courier. Environmental impact becomes dispersed across ordinary routines. A baseline gathers those routines into view.
The first review should be deliberately simple. Choose a representative period, usually three to twelve months, and list what entered the practice, what happened in the studio and what left it. The purpose is not to produce a perfect carbon account. It is to locate patterns: the material bought repeatedly, the process that creates the most difficult waste, the equipment that runs longest, the journeys that dominate the year, the packaging that returns and the packaging that does not.
A useful baseline combines quantities with observations. Record electricity or gas use if the studio has accessible meters, but also note which equipment is energy-intensive and how it is scheduled. Record significant material purchases, but also note unused stock and offcuts. Count shipments and their modes where possible, but also describe why they occurred and who controlled the decision. Numbers reveal scale; narrative reveals agency.
Draw the boundary you can use
An artist working alone in a rented studio will not have the same data as a large practice employing technicians and fabricators. The boundary should be wide enough to reveal important impacts and narrow enough to remain usable. Begin with direct studio operations, materials, significant fabrication, packaging, freight and professional travel. Add digital systems, exhibitions and supply-chain information where they are material to the practice and reasonably available.
It is helpful to mark each item as controlled, influenced or observed. The artist controls the choice of a frequently purchased medium. They may influence a gallery's decision to consolidate shipping. They may only be able to observe the energy source used by a landlord. This distinction prevents the review from becoming an account of failures that the artist cannot change. It also identifies conversations that may expand influence over time.
For collaborative work, agree the boundary at the beginning. If a fabricator purchases metal and arranges finishing, ask for material type, weight, recycled content where known, process and transport information. If a venue builds the exhibition architecture, establish whether it will be reused and who retains it. Shared information is not an attempt to transfer blame; it is part of responsible production.
Identify hotspots
A hotspot is an activity whose scale, frequency, hazard or strategic significance makes it worthy of attention. It may be visually modest. A small studio can accumulate a considerable quantity of contaminated solvent over a year. A large installation may use mostly reclaimed material but require repeated long-distance freight. A digital practice may consume relatively little material while depending on equipment replacement and substantial data storage. The baseline should challenge assumptions rather than confirm them.
Three questions help establish priority. How large or frequent is the activity? How serious could its consequences be for climate, waste, ecosystems or health? How much control or influence does the artist have? A high-impact activity under direct control is an obvious starting point. A high-impact activity controlled by a partner becomes a conversation. A low-impact activity may still be worth changing if the solution is immediate, but it should not absorb attention that belongs elsewhere.
Some impacts should be prioritised because they concern safety rather than environmental scale. Uncontrolled dust, vapour or hazardous waste cannot wait for an annual sustainability plan. Product labels and safety data sheets should be reviewed, and a task-specific risk assessment completed where necessary. The Health and Safety Executive emphasises that a safety data sheet is a source for assessment, not the assessment itself. Artists employing others or sharing a studio may have additional legal duties.
Set a small number of meaningful objectives
An objective should describe a result rather than a good intention. Reduce studio waste is too broad to guide action. By the end of the year, measure the three largest waste streams and establish a verified route for reuse, recycling or safe disposal is more useful. Use less energy becomes record kiln loads for six months and reduce avoidable part-load firings. Improve sourcing might become request composition and safety information for every new medium before purchase.
Objectives should include both reduction and enabling work. A material inventory does not itself cut impact, but it prevents duplicate purchases and reveals ageing stock. A conversation with a shipper may not change the next journey, but it can place lower-emission alternatives and estimated carbon data on future quotations. Documentation is often the infrastructure from which better choices become possible.
Avoid setting too many targets. Three well-chosen objectives, reviewed quarterly, will usually produce more learning than a long list of promises. At least one should address a genuine hotspot. One may improve knowledge or systems. One may be exploratory: a material trial, a shared procurement arrangement or a conversation with a conservator.
PRACTICAL SHIFTFor one month, place a dated container or clearly marked area beside each significant waste stream. Do not change behaviour initially. Observe quantity, contamination and frequency. The evidence will make the first intervention far more intelligent.
Keep a decision journal
A sustainability journal can be no more than a dated document or spreadsheet. Record the question, available information, chosen course and reason. Include uncertainties. If a preferred material was unavailable, note the substitute. If air freight was necessary to meet a non-negotiable exhibition date, record the circumstances and what could prevent repetition. These notes create institutional memory in a growing studio and protect against confident claims made from incomplete recollection.
The journal also reveals progress that a single annual number may miss. A redesigned artwork may use more material but last considerably longer. A safer process may initially increase cost. A consolidated shipment may delay delivery. Sustainability involves judgement, and good judgement needs a record of context.
Measure enough to decide
Measurement should answer a question. If the studio wants to know whether kiln scheduling is improving, record loads, programmes and failed pieces. If freight is the concern, record actual weight, route and mode. If a material creates waste, measure purchased quantity against material incorporated into work, reusable remainder and disposal. Data gathered without a decision in view soon becomes burdensome.
Begin with activity data rather than a claim about impact. Kilowatt-hours, kilograms, kilometres, number of shipments and litres of product are observable. They can later be translated using a recognised method where useful. Keep the original activity data because conversion factors and methodologies change over time.
Carbon accounting groups emissions into direct fuel use, purchased energy and wider value-chain activity. An individual artist does not need to reproduce a corporate inventory to learn from the concept. Direct studio heat, electricity, major materials, fabrication, freight and professional travel provide a practical starting boundary. State exclusions, particularly where data is controlled by a landlord, venue or partner.
Use the same method across the period being compared. The UK Government publishes annual conversion factors, while the Gallery Climate Coalition calculator provides a tool tailored to common arts-sector activities. Do not combine results from different calculators as though their boundaries were identical. A number is meaningful only with its unit, source, year and scope.
Avoid converting every small purchase during the first year. Weight estimates and spend-based methods can help locate possible hotspots, but they should not be presented as exact product footprints. Once a hotspot is identified, better physical data can be sought. Measurement should become more precise where precision could change a decision.
Qualitative evidence remains necessary. A safer dye form, an artwork redesigned for repair or a fairer production schedule may not appear clearly in carbon totals. Keep a short narrative beside the indicators so that progress is not reduced to what is easiest to count.
