Across a square 224 cm canvas, John Sabraw builds Presence of Water (2025) from acrylic, iron oxide pigments derived from acid mine drainage, Appalachian coal, mixed media and artists’ colours. Turquoise and deep blue passages spread through veils of pale aqua, rust, ochre and soft pink, while scratched and layered marks keep the surface active. The shifting field suggests water, mineral deposits and atmospheric change without resolving into a fixed landscape. This large-scale abstract painting brings material detail and environmental resonance into close view.
