Professional Background & Credentials
Volcan is a multidisciplinary artistic collaboration between Rex (Netherlands) and Edna (Colombia), whose work explores contemporary social narratives through painting, sculpture, installation, assemblage, and conceptual practice.
Based in Notting Hill, London, the duo has developed an internationally recognised practice that combines storytelling, material experimentation, and social engagement. Drawing upon their backgrounds in creative direction, design, craftsmanship, and visual communication, they create works that address issues of migration, identity, displacement, resilience, and transformation.
Their work achieved international recognition through participation in the 60th Venice Biennale (2024), where they presented Offline: Refugee Remembrance Wall within the Republic of Cameroon Pavilion. The installation explored the stories of refugees who lost their lives during migration journeys, using portraiture and symbolic visual language to create a powerful act of remembrance and reflection.
Alongside their socially engaged projects, Volcan is recognised for innovative material-led works that incorporate reclaimed urban surfaces, industrial remnants, and found objects, exploring broader themes of renewal, value, and cultural memory.
Their work continues to attract collectors, institutions, and audiences interested in contemporary art that combines strong visual impact with meaningful social and environmental engagement.

Curatorial Perspective
Volcan occupies a distinctive position within contemporary art through a practice that combines social engagement, material innovation, and powerful storytelling. Whether exploring migration, memory, identity, or transformation, their work consistently seeks to reveal the human stories that connect us across cultures and experiences. By moving fluidly between portraiture, installation, reclaimed materials, and conceptual practice, Volcan demonstrates how contemporary art can foster empathy, preserve memory, and encourage meaningful dialogue around some of the defining issues of our time.
