Improv in Blue (2018) is a square abstract painting by Michelle Gagliano, made in oil and mixed media on panel. Layers of turquoise and sky blue are interwoven with muted gold, ochre and smoky grey, creating a richly mottled surface. Along the lower edge, denser passages of rust, deep brown and granular gold form a horizon-like band. The contrast between luminous blue and earth-toned texture gives the work both expansiveness and weight.
